5 Dollar Wrench Attack: How to protect your Bitcoin from physical violence

Imagine coming home after a long day, opening the door, looking forward to just relaxing. But suddenly, you hear footsteps behind you. Before you can turn around, two figures grab you and overpower you. Before you even realize what's happening, you find yourself tied to a chair in your own living room. Panic rises within you. What do they want from you? Hopefully, it's not a $5 Wrench Attack!

What is the $5 Wrench Attack?

The term 5 Dollar Wrench Attack comes from a funny but dark little comic.

In this story, two hackers break into a Bitcoin millionaire's home. He is quickly overpowered and tied to a chair. They know that the Bitcoins are stored on his laptop. The first hacker uses all his knowledge and begins hacking through the security systems. But then he encounters a problem: The Bitcoin wallet is too well encrypted.

He breaks out in a cold sweat. The best hacking tools on the market would cost him thousands of dollars, and even then, it would be extremely difficult to break into the wallet. Desperate, he turns to his accomplice: "Damn, we'll probably have to spend around 10,000 euros to crack the encryption."

Am Stuhl gefesselt. Die 5 DOllar Wrench Attack.

His colleague, who had been sitting quietly in the corner, suddenly grins and says, "You know what? Forget all this hacking stuff. It's taking too long. I have a better idea." He stands up, throws on his jacket, and points to the door: "We're going to go to the hardware store, buy a really big wrench for $5, and beat the shit out of that guy until he tells us his password." ????️

Der 5 Dollar Wrench

And so the 5 Dollar Wrench Attack is born – the simple, brutal plan not to hack the technical side, but to threaten the person behind the wallet and force them to reveal their password.

How can you protect yourself from a $5 Wrench Attack?

Prevention is key! To minimize the likelihood of such an attack, there are a few simple but effective steps you can take:

  1. Don't talk about your Bitcoin holdings ????️
The first rule is: Let as few people as possible know that you have a lot of Bitcoin. Don't share information about your holdings on social media or with friends. The fewer people who know about your wealth, the lower the risk of you becoming a target.
  2. Don't wear flashy Bitcoin merchandise ????
As cool as Bitcoin hats or T-shirts may be, they could send the wrong message in shady places. They could make someone think you're a lucrative target for an attack. So keep a low profile, especially in foreign countries or unsafe areas.
  3. Rely on physical defense ????
Self-defense or martial arts can also be an option for escaping an assault. Of course, this isn't about encouraging violence, but fast feet or the ability to defend yourself could help you escape in such a situation.

The Honeypot Trick: Your life insurance in a critical situation ????

If, despite all precautions, you fall victim to a 5 Dollar Wrench Attack, there is a clever strategy that can limit the damage: the Honeypot.

A honeypot is a small wallet that contains only a fraction of your actual Bitcoin assets. The goal is to deceive the attacker into believing they've gotten everything from you, while the majority of your assets remain safe in another wallet.

This is how the honeypot works:

  1. Divide your assets ????
Let's assume you have €100,000 in Bitcoin. You divide this wealth between two wallets: one containing €90,000 and the other €10,000. The wallet with €10,000 is your honeypot.
  2. Make the honeypot credible ????
Make your honeypot appear as if it's your primary wallet. If you're forced to open your wallet in a threatening situation, you can show the honeypot to the attacker. They'll think they've stolen all of your assets, while the majority remains safe.
  3. Have passwords for both wallets handy ????
It's important that you have the honeypot password readily available. The attacker will be impatient and want immediate access to your Bitcoins. Give them access to the smaller wallet and hope that's enough.

Example:

Imagine you're being robbed and the attacker demands that you hand over your Bitcoin. You give him the access data to your honeypot containing €10,000. The attacker is satisfied and leaves you alone, believing he's got everything. Your main assets of €90,000 remain safe and untouched.

Conclusion: Protection through invisibility and deception ????️

The $5 Wrench Attack shows us that the greatest danger doesn't always come from the digital world, but can also be physical. However, with the right precautions, you can minimize the risk and, in the worst-case scenario, limit the damage. Be careful who you share information about your Bitcoin holdings with, avoid wearing flashy Bitcoin merchandise, and consider whether the honeypot trick is a sensible security measure for you.

By taking these steps, you'll protect yourself not only from digital attacks but also from real-life threats. Stay safe and don't let anyone take advantage of your wrench moment! ????️????
