Verifying Specter DIY Firmware: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you want to ensure that the software on your Specter DIY is actually the official and secure version of Specter, you should verify the Specter DIY firmware. I'll show you how to do this step by step in this blog post.

What you need

Upgrade firmware

  • One SD card (max. 32 GB)
  • A computer with SD card reader

Initially install firmware

  • A Mini USB cable
  • A computer

Step 1: Download firmware

To download the correct firmware for your Specter DIY, go to the GitHub page from Specter (or via Specter Solutions > Downloads) and download the latest version. Make sure to correct firmware for your device.


Upgrade firmware: If you already have a Specter DIY firmware installed, you need to download the upgrade file.

Initially install firmware: If you have not installed any firmware yet, you need to download the “initial firmware” file.

Step 2: Download necessary files

Before you install the firmware on your Spectre DIY, it is important to make sure that it is the genuine and not a tampered software. To do this, you perform a verification through:

Ⅰ) Download the Public Key from the developer (Stepan Snigirev).

ⅠⅠ) Download the SHA256 file which contains the hash of the software.

Step 3: Verify Specter DIY firmware

Use the Sparrow Wallet, to verify the Specter DIY. Open the Publix Key (the ASC file you downloaded) with the Sparrow Wallet. If the file doesn't open automatically, you can load it manually into the wallet.
Now proceed as follows:

  • Download the Firmware into the Sparrow Wallet.
  • Select the downloaded SHA256 file out of.

If you see three green check marks, it means that the firmware you downloaded is indeed the official and secure version.

Step 4: Load software onto the Specter DIY

Initially install firmware:
Make sure the disco board jumper is set to the middle.

Connect the Specter DIY Disco Board to your computer using the mini-USB cable. Now copy the "initial firmware" file to the Disco Board's directory, and the firmware will be installed automatically.

Upgrade firmware:

Important: You need an SD card that has no data at all. If there is still data on it, it should be deleted.
Once you've completed the verification, you can upload the firmware to the SD card. Insert the SD card into your Specter DIY, and the upgrade will be performed and the new version will be installed.

Important: During the upgrade process, do not turn off the Specter DIY or remove the SD card or cables, as this may cause serious problems.

If the exact same version that you want to install is already installed during the upgrade, this will be displayed on the screen and nothing else will be installed.

Verify possible problems with the Specter DIY firmware

If you have downloaded an older version of the software or the firmware file multiple times, confusion may arise. Make sure that the File name correct is with the and no additional characters such as "(1)" are included in the file name. Otherwise, the verification will fail.
